Social Media – the death of privacy or the beginning of a whole new way of doing business?

It’s Sunday evening, I’m preparing for an extremely busy month ahead and between time blocking client work I’m flitting in and out of Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. The local weather is very wintery and several friends are travelling and the newsfeed is buzzing with pictures of white-out conditions. And I got to thinking – where does business stop and personal life begin? In fact is there even a line anymore?

Like it or not I don’t think there is such a thing as privacy anymore.

Not everything needs to be shared and neither should you.

But how much is enough?

We all love to be loved and we all enjoy making someone’s day  – I’m a big believer in encouraging others and sincerely want to help wherever I can.

Do you realize just how much positive influence you can have over your Social Channels? I’ve included a couple of recent examples of activity on my own timeline that made me realize what a gift being Social truly is.

We get birthday notifications almost daily and while none of us want to be reminded that we’re not as young as we used to be  (I’m 50 this year!) It’s a great opportunity to reconnect and help make someone’s special day that bit more special. I got a comment back the other day that blew me away! Go figure? You just never know the difference you can make by just being you.

This morning, our middle daughter Ellen had the opportunity to speak at church about her upcoming adventure back Australia with YWAM. This time she’ll be leading a team on her own. Of course I’m proud, who wouldn’t be? I decided on the spur of the moment to video her. Just used my iPhone and with her permission I posted it to Facebook – at the time of writing it’s been viewed over 600 times today already! But what about doing business on Social? No one wants to be that MLM salesperson that everyone hides from when they walk in the room. Nothing against direct selling at all but you gotta stop trying to stalk your friends and family and reach wider! I was asked the other day how I get new business? Did I use a sophisticated a lead generation system with an online sales funnel or what? My answer might surprise you – It’s simple really, people just call me and ask me for help! And just then my cell rang and it was a guy who I hadn’t spoken to for probably three years! He’s a HR Consultant and has a client, several actually, who need help with their marketing and with the New Year it was time to move in a new direction. He knew exactly what I had been up to all through this time and always read my newsletters – and that’s how it works!

I started my New Year with a commitment to myself to get back to blogging – here I am #2 of the year. I know one of the struggles we’re facing this year is getting our posts on our Business pages being seen organically on Facebook. So I went back to see how much reach my post had had – I was so happy so see I’d reached over 1000 people! I then clicked on my website to see that the blog has also been opened over 130 times. Now am I selling anything? Nope! Am I being transparent and approachable and real – you betcha!

“People like to do business with people who they know, like and trust”

And what better way to find those exact people than through Social Media? In fact Kev and I haven’t seen each other in almost three years too but thanks to our Social engagement, it’s like we meet each other daily! Just today he tagged me in a post as he was clearing snow and was wearing one of our famous #WeMakeStuffHappen toques!
